Audio transfers from legacy formats to digital files
Cassette, DAT, vinyl and other legacy recordings can become difficult to access as the original machines disappear. Vigilante Studio can assess supported formats, capture the audio and prepare agreed digital files.
The service is for material you own or have permission to copy. It is not a way to copy commercial releases or other copyrighted material without proof of ownership.
Start with the original source
The condition of the tape or disc affects the transfer. Age, storage, mould, damaged shells, failing mechanisms and repeated playback can all change what is possible.
Do not play a fragile source repeatedly to check whether it still works. Describe the format and condition first. Rupert can confirm whether it can be handled in-house or needs specialist attention.
Supported formats are assessed individually
Vigilante Studio has experience with cassette, DAT, vinyl and CD sources. Other formats can be discussed.

The source should be captured at a suitable resolution before access copies or other delivery formats are created. This keeps a useful archive master and avoids building the project around a compressed file.
The final delivery can be agreed as WAV, AIFF or another practical format. If the material is being prepared for a release, editing, track separation, naming, restoration and mastering can be scoped separately.
Restoration after transfer
A successful transfer preserves what is on the source, including the faults. Hiss, hum, clicks, damaged sections and uneven level may still need restoration.
Do not assume that every transfer should be heavily cleaned. Some archive material benefits from light treatment that improves access while retaining its original character.
Ownership and copyright
You must own the recording or have the permission needed to copy it. Vigilante Studio does not copy commercial releases or any other copyrighted material, on vinyl, CD, cassette or any other format, unless proof of ownership is provided.
If the material is connected to a commercial release, label, estate or archive, state that in the enquiry so the required ownership and delivery responsibilities are clear.
How the project is quoted
The quotation depends on the source format, duration, condition, number of items, transfer route and any editing or restoration required.
Send a list of the formats, approximate running times, condition and desired output. Do not post or deliver original media until Rupert confirms the arrangements.
Questions about audio transfers
Can you transfer cassette, DAT and vinyl recordings?
These formats can be assessed. Confirm the number of items, condition and required delivery before sending the originals.
Can you transfer reel-to-reel tape?
No. Reel-to-reel transfers are not offered.
Do you copy commercial releases or other copyrighted material?
No. Vigilante Studio does not copy commercial releases or any other copyrighted material, on vinyl, CD, cassette or any other format, unless proof of ownership is provided.

Tell Rupert what is on the source
List the format, condition, running time and the digital files you need. The original media should only be sent after the transfer route is confirmed.
